What Is That Community Powered Search Thing On Your Web Pages? 09/05/06 Return To Online Bookselling Home Page |

A few days ago I was asked by a customer what that "Community Powered Search Thing" was in the right column of my web pages. It is called a Swicki and is produced by Eurekster. It is intended to be a focused search tool, i.e., it is a narrowed list of common things that a typical online bookseller might be interested in researching. The box of words is called a "Buzz Cloud, and I kind of control the words that appear for everyone to click on. I say "kind of" because if someone types in a search parameter that is not already in the "Buzz Cloud," they will be able to perform a search of that word or phrase, but later when I log into my Swicki account, I am asked if I would like that term to be added to the cloud. For example, if you type in "abc xyz," then the next time I log into my Swicki account, I am told that someone is interested in "abc xyz" and asked if I would like to add this term to the cloud. If there is something that you would like to see in the cloud, just type it into the search box and the next time I log into my Swicki account I will add it if it is relevant to online bookselling. Note: I have no visibility or access to any information that says who searched for what on the Swicki, so your search privacy will remain private. I am only interested in making this useful to you. Since my website is intended to be a tool for you to use and a place to find bookselling news, I encourage you to search away and let's build a "Buzz Cloud" where you can find any topic of interest to online booksellers. Much like any search engine, it is sensitive to variations of words, i.e., "sell used books" will return different results than "selling used books." That is why I encourage you to help build a tool that is useful to you too. You are visitor:
